Everybody likes an outdoor picnic. Most people will also like to eat grilled meat or fish products. Some may prefer vegetables. For these foods a portable grill is a requirement. All portable grills that work outside use Charcoal as fuel. Charcoal grilling can be great fun and produce great-tasting food. Lighting a charcoal grill requires a little expertise and some precautions. You may use the grill for a picnic or in your backyard. The precautions for lighting the grill are the same. Lighting a grill properly is important to insure that no mishap occurs. Hence following a few safety measures will go a long way to make your event a success.

The first step in lighting a grill is to select a proper open place which is free of bushes or any obstruction. A small clearing is the best place to install your grill for your barbeque dishes. The grill should be thoroughly cleaned and all dirt or tell tale signs of previous use like ash removed.Remove the grill and place it aside

The grill should now be placed in a small open place and the vents at the bottom of the grill opened. The next step is to take out the charcoal from the storage bag. The Charcoal will be in small pieces which are referred to as briquettes. Ensure that the charcoal pieces are dry and not wet because of any water or moisture. Dry charcoal is an essential requirement for a grill. It will be a good idea to carry the charcoal briquettes in a waterproof and airtight bag.

The charcoal briquettes are now to be placed in the grill. Always wear gloves when you handle the briquettes so that they are not sullied. The briquettes are arranged at the bottom of the grill.

It is important to light the charcoal briquettes quickly. For this it is advisable to use a lighter fluid. This fluid should be sprinkled on the charcoal pieces, taking care that the fluid wets all the briquettes. Excessive use of lighter fluid should be avoided as the fluid creates a strong odour which may not be liked by some guests.

The next step is to light the charcoal. This can be done buy a long match or a piece of paper. Generally the charcoal briquettes will take about 15 minutes to start giving the required amount of heat. When they start to glow red, the grill should be placed on the grill. A person is now ready to cook on the grill. The exact cooking steps will differ depending on the type of food or vegetable to be grilled.

The final step is to douse the embers of the coals once the cooking is over. The briquettes can be sprayed with water for the embers to die out. All along care should be taken not to touch any part of the grill which is hot; otherwise there is a chance of a burn. While cooking on a grill, keep your wits about yourself and handle the grill with care.
