Portuguese American Carnival in Mineola

Review of the Mineola Portuguese Feast and Carnival that took place on June 10th-12th in Wilson Park, Mineola, New York.

The Three Day Portuguese American Feast and Carnival was on Friday evening the 10th of June and continued until Sunday night the 12th of June. Wilson Park was the hub of Portuguese culture as the large Portuguese community in Mineola, New York, celebrated their traditions. As you walked to the park, almost immediately you smelled the sweet aroma of freshly barbecued pork and chicken wafting towards you in the air as sounds of laughter and traditional music grab your attention. Almost every hour of the feast, large crowds thronged to the feast as the local businesses and Portuguese clubs worked to make the carnival an event to remember.

The local Portuguese community is one of the largest in America with plenty of Portuguese restaurants, bars and bodegas in Mineola. I initially found out about the feast from the Heart of Portugal Restaurant in Mineola as they awaited the festivities on Friday morning.

The attendees had come from far and wide, from Portuguese communities as far as Farmingdale, Jamaica, and parts of Queens. There were even visitors from the New Jersey Portuguese community. The night was alive with traditional dances, music and plenty of alcohol. The food was exceptional and exquisite. The beef Bifana, a traditional Portuguese sandwich, was one of my favorites. Barbecued chicken called the Frango and grilled sardines called the Sardinhas Assadas was another highlight of the festival. In my personal opinion, nothing beats the Cabrito, the Portuguese style Goat curry preparation. There were also people from the surrounding Italian, Indian, Spanish and German communities attending the feast. Mr. Frank Scaturro, who is currently running for congress, was another prominent attendee at the feast.

The carnival rides were a hit with the children. The giant slide was a breathtaking experience and the Ferris wheel offered a great view of Mineola. There were other rides like the swings and the rotation contraptions like the Dizzy Dragons spin ride. There were also basketball hoops for shootouts to win great prizes and the Paratroopers ride for the enjoyment of both adults and kids.

The First Annual Mineola Athletic Association Soccer Festival took place alongside the Portuguese American Feast. There were soccer matches between various Portuguese soccer clubs from the local areas. The center stage match was between Portuguese clubs from Jamaica and Farmingdale on Saturday evening. The feast and carnival ended on Sunday night at 10 PM on June 12th to great fanfare. The event has been an ongoing specialty of the local Portuguese community and is close becoming a decade old.
